Project 3: Interpretation & Representation:
Principles, Tectonics & Sensory- Sensory Space
Introduction
After understanding the basics of how the architectural design develops, knowing the basics , and what are the factors to consider and its whole process. The student can move on to further develop it to a Sensory Space to anticipate and accommodate the user’s needs and emotions. Moreover, understanding how implementing a design element or principle would erupt a specific emotion would enhance the structure to create a journey, and how it can ignite a sensorial experience for the user during the pandemic period. Furthermore, how the sensorial experience can highlight banal action.
Project Task & Overview
In Project 3, it incorporates what we have learned from Project 1 and Project 2. We were assigned to select the design elements and principles from Project 2 as our design intention. Moreover, further research and explore how tectonic and emotions correlate, and the spatial relationship and developing poetry of our own intention.
Design Intention
Using the same idea of having different sizes of lines which controls the amount of sunlight entering the structure and understanding how light and shadow and the texture of the material can create a form of space that brings out a specific emotion.
The Journey
The journey begins by crawling. The design intention was to create a space where half of it’s bright and the other half is dark . The brighter part of the area represents the beginning of the lock down in Kuala Lumpur, showing that I was not worried and remained calm. However, the darker space represents the covid cases that are slowly rising.
After crawling, the user would then enter a dark space where the person can stand and come across a ladder. The strips of light that are shined vertically and reflect at the ladder represent the direction.
The Tunnel
The person then enters a dark tunnel where there are more threads of light reflecting the concrete surface. The concrete walls were to represent the cold and chaotic, yet the grey concrete brings out the emotion of calm to the user. The tunnel represents the realisation and struggle phase during my isolation.
More threads of light helps to show the direction in the tunnel representing hope at the end of the tunnel.
The Meditation Room
At the end of the tunnel the user will then meet the meditation room where they can grasp the view of the facade and the light shines on the facade creating a unique shadow. The design intention for the meditation room where there is the most light enters represents hope, and so does the facade which it was arranged vertically facing towards the sky.

Reflection
From this Project 3 I gained gained TGC 1Discipline Specific Knowledge, TGC 2 Lifelong, and TGC 3 Thinking and Problem Solving Skill.
I learned to create different variety of sensorial space that brings out specific emotions by alternating the design of the model and what materials that brought up that emotion. Not only that, I learned to develop my own poetry and creating a journey which relates to my experience in the Covid-19 pandemic.
