Project 2: Wellness Center PLUS
Workshop
Design Concept
Dysthymia is a form of a long term depression. The design intention was to take in the consideration of environmental design, to ensure that they feel belong and not mentally stressing them. A place where they feel invited and a change of space instead of staying at home trapping themselves with their own mental illness
Introduction
Furthering the thematic exploration of “engaging environment and community”, Project 2 calls for the design of a Wellness Center PLUS within the Kepong Botanical Gardens, bordering the suburban neighbourhood of Taman Ehsan.
Project Task & Overview
Students are required to have design proposal by incorporating the findings from Project 2A and including precedent studies to develop design solutions in terms of passive strategies for sustainable design, and merge harmoniously with environment and site and provide the best of spatial experiences in fostering a sense of community.
Passive Design Startegies
Presentation Board
A healthy person usually would overcome a sad incident in their life. However, failure to overcome this issue would possibly lead to long term Depression if not treated. People with Dysthymia would feel demotivated and feeling of hopelessness. That is why the Wellness center needs programs that they can bring home to feel proud of their progress and what have they accomplished
The most public space is located at the far left where people from different levels could see each other while having a grid structure as the ceiling in between the levels to provide the user a sense of privacy, but visually permeable.
The design intention for the structure is an open concept, allowing one to take advantage to implement passive design strategies while remaining the idea of togetherness and observing one's progress.
Different design of biodiversity implemented in the wellness center that is great for the visitors making it more welcoming and blending in.
Reflection
Project 2B was an interesting project as we learn how we can identify and analyse the environmental qualities of the Kepong Botanical Garden, Malaysia. Moreover, taking information from what we learned and design a Wellness Center for Dysthymia people. This has made me learn more about people who have Dysthymia and how the design gives a sense of community, and different materiality responds to the physical and social context.
