Introduction
For the final project, students are required to design a visitor center for the user to "Discover" reflecting on what Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani relates to the people, culture, activities, or history where it could be the center of a place to learn and have fun exploring the discovery center and express the spirit of the place.
The project is a continuation of Project 1 and Project 2A. Project 1 was about the poetic architecture in a hypothetical site. Project 2a focuses on the historical research and architectural responses to the site.
Project Task & Overview
Students are required to design a 2 story standalone building and implement a universal design for everyone to be able to access. We were given the choice to select one of the sites ( Site A ) or ( Site B ). However, students are required to choose between concentric or linear space arrangements for the building design. Students needed to compile their drawings and renderings into a minimum of 6 -10 A1 boards. During the process of the project, some workshops would help students to aid in their design progress.
Workshops
Task 3 focuses on the structural system of the building
Task 4 focuses on designing the landscape.
Reflection
From this project what I gain was an understanding of the process of crafting the poetic journey of the discovery center, extracting and developing designs that relate to expressing the spirit of the Genius Loci in Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani. The process of crafting the poetic journey was challenging as we ask ourselves, " What Do I want The Discovery Center to be in order to express the meaning and the spirit of this place."
Moreover, designing spatial spaces for specific programs that respond and take into consideration of human behavior or specific activities. From workshops 3 and 4, I learned how the structure can have an impact on the design of the building which led to coming up with solutions to overcome problems relating to both structure and design intention. Workshop 4 helps to guide students to design sidewalks or roads to have convenient access to the building. Furthermore, able to create the modal by using the modeling software Revit and Sketch Up, using Enscape as a rendering software to produce the rendered images, and Photoshop. In the future, I want to enhance my ability with software such as Revit and SketchUp, explore more rendering software, and develop a sketching habit that will aid in the design process.
