Project 2: Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality
Espérance
Introduction
From the previous project we learned how to analyse and develop diagram architectural principles. Taking from what we had learned about the 5 architectural principles and implement them into the second project to create an introspective Architecture Folly.
The question we should ask is what is Introspective? And what is Folly?
A folly is similar to tectonics which is more ornamental that would bring out a certain emotion. As for " Introspective" is more towards understanding oneself and our emotions.
Ever since the Covid-19 came to Malaysia, it has made an impact to many people's lives and pushed countries into lockdowns thereby driving social institutions to deal with the emerging phenomenon . Inspired to possibly thresh out insights that can be derived from reflective and rethinking dispositions about the self, this project hopes that an architectural approach to where we are right now could challenge certain ways or postures by which we frame ourselves, our relationship with nature, and others
Project Task
In a group of 3 we were assigned to select architectural principles from the previous project, define and further explore the architectural principles from the previous assignment and self-consciousness. Moreover, communicating our ideas, thoughts and design development through diagramming, drawings and model making to generate and craft Architectural Folly that has spatial experience, with a maximum volume of 125 m3 .
Overview
The outcome of this project is to have the ability to develop a simple structure using architectonics and have a basic level of understanding materiality and detailing that would help to capture the specific experiential spatial quality of the design.
Narrative
1st space
The Halo Light
The halo light effect gives of the user a sense of hope. Reflects what we desire for the pandemic to be over.
2nd space
The Lost Phase
The experience throughout the pandemic has affected us both physically and mentally, gradually we start to feel lost
3rd Space
Revealing Your Path
The transition from a dark space to a lit space reflects your path is being revealed and it shows that you can see a positive outcome at the top
4th Space
Space Looking Back
At the top of the stairs the user finally reaches to an open space which is well ventilated.
The user will see the view of the hyperbolic paraboloid tectonic structure as a way to give the user a reward for reaching to the and feeling to motivated to move forward.
Design Principle:
Concept
Our Intention to create a model that looks like it's collapsing which reflects what we are going through the pandemic
Concept from Sou House
Split terrain concept from the Sou House. each floor still remains at ground floor. Natural concepts and usage of wood as primary structure
Design Principle: Context
Sun Path
Because the building is facing north, the sun path from dusk till dawn would create different shadow patterns on the paraboloid depending on the time. This is even more exaggerated on the second floor as it falls under the open space category with various openings around the build. During noon, the sunlight would also enter the opening from the roof, shining downwards, creating a halo effect at the centre of the building, giving a transition to the light source on the first floor.
Wind Path
The building is located at a hillside facing north. Because of this, wind from the south travels into the entrance and around the first floor and flows out from the various openings on the second floor. This maintains circulation around the first floor, giving the user a cool and breezy experience while being in the first floor.

Design Principle:
Circulation
look back at the folly and see how far they have come
started to see hope and believe in oneself
the depressing moments during the pandemic
seeing light at the end of the tunnel
feeling hopeless during the pandemic as the folly looks as if its collapsing
Material
Cross-laminated timber is a solid, multi-layered timber construction material. Acacia Mangium
• High fire resistance
• Chemical resistance,
• Sustainable building material

Reflection
From this project I gained an understanding of to implement the architectural prinples into our own design. Moreover, understanding how can different type of materials and space that would bring out a desire spatial experience
