Project 1: Diagramming Architectural Principles

Introduction

What is diagrams?

Diagrams are to there to help convey the architectural intentions of the building. The idea can be simplified and the idea of it that should be easily understood. In this project learning the architectural principles help students to understand the architectural intention.

Overview

The first project introduced us to learn diagramming architectural principle which is the process of abstracting and simplifying an idea so that it can be easily understood. In a group students learn how to sketch and develop diagrams that help to convey the architectural intent. Investigate how architecture and spaces are created from establishing design intentions and the making of architectural elements: architectonics - solid, planes, lines and frames. The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would be in-cooperated into this assignment

Part 1

In a group of 5  we were assigned to one of the following architects and their key buildings which was The Sou House by Atelier Thu. We were required to conduct a research about the architect and analyses key building through the drawings

and how these intentions are translated via diagramming architectural principles

Conceptual Analysis

As he moves upstairs to the study space, he again will have a view of the ground level. This is achieved though the improvisation from the terrain​

Split terrain house​

In order to cater to the client’s request for a single storey house while resolving the issue of limited land space, the  concept of a split terrain house was formed. ​

This idea allowed the illusion of a single storey house to be maintained as each floor would still remain at "ground level" as one would see looking out the window on both floors.​

User experience:​

While standing at the dining room, the user will be able to view the ground level,

Sun Path

Located in Japan, northern hemisphere. The sun path in summer and winter differs. And how does the architects behind Sou House tackles the changing sun path? ​

Wind Path And Ventilation
Design of roof overhang​

During the summer, the sun is a few degrees off from overhead. Therefore, to keep the house cool, the roof blocks off direct sunlight into the house.​

In the winter, the sun is tilted to approximately 45 degrees. The roof overhang is designed to blocks off direct sunlight to user’s eye level while able to shine into the group to heat up the house. ​

Due to its site context, wind comes from the south and up the hill. How does the architects use this natural wind to help ventilate air around the structure?​

The wind flows towards the north side (hillside) into the dining room and flows through the interior and out from the windows located on the second floor.​

Conceptual Analysis

Columns Placement

The points of intersection of the lines show the position of the columns where ideally it would collect the loads from the timber beams and the rest of the weight of the spanning elements (floor, roof, beams) distributing the loads down to the ground foundation.​

Spatial arrangement of spaces on the second floor​

The diagram shows the layout of the second floor plan of the house that is equally divided into two, horizontally., which demonstrate a symmetry of the house and proportionally divided into 4 vertically​

The diagram shows a 6 x 6 m2 space which is then divided by a wall resulting a 1 : 2 ratio rectangle.​

The diagram shows a shaded area roughly 2.5 x 2.5 m2. it was split to two section with different dimension while maintaining the the proportion of the house showing an asymmetrical balance.​

Supporting beams for the secondary beams and they are connected to the columns where it would transfer the loads of a structure directly to columns.

Collector Beams / Primary Beams​

Horizontal beams connecting to the primary beams which are collector beams. The feeder beams are evenly distributed so that the load to the primary beam is not directly connected to the columns.

Conceptual Analysis

Adjacent Space

Spaces are separated with the change of level or height of the ground plane. In most parts of the house, the architect uses this technique to separate spaces​

Inter-locking space​

A void that features both the first floor and the second. It interlocks both spaces of the upper and lower floor to create a tall ceiling and void for the dining room​

Spaces are linked by a common space​

Private spaces are arranged upstairs that guests at the first floor would not be able to have direct view of the top whereas the top has direct view to the first floor

Spaces are separated with a plane and an entry is used, to indicate the passing through from one space to another

The difference of public and private spaces​

Public spaces such as the living room and the dining room in the house has higher ceilings compared to private spaces, for example, the master bedroom​

The architect’s intention is analysed and concluded that it was designed for guests to feel more welcomed.​

Circulation Analysis

Primary Circulation

Mainly for the guests. The main entrance is from the 2nd floor. The entrance is big and equipped with shoe storage. Guests would come in from the main entrance and head to the first floor to go to the dining area, living area or go out to the deck to enjoy the breeze.​

Private Circulation

The entrance is from the first floor. It’s more of a private entrance as it helps to ease the owner to bring in groceries to the kitchen from the car. The owner would access kitchen, closet and storage room easier through the private entrance. It can also be used for elderly or toddlers who have difficulties coming down the stairs.

From this project I learned how to produce diagrams that help to convey the architectural intention and a understanding of the five architectural principles. Furthermore, understanding the architects design intention and from there I was able to understand how to develop into simplified diagrams.
